Old and Outdated Wiring and Wiring Systems
As time presses on, so does the advancement of technology. And with advancement, the materials we use to build more efficiently capable and safer electrical systems also improve. These materials help us to better how we power homes and businesses in Round Rock.
In older buildings and residential properties, we often come across outdated wiring materials used such as aluminum wiring and electrical panels. With how much renovation and remodeling work we see being performed, often the electrical system is overlooked. With more load requirements being asked of the wiring system and panel, it can increase the risk of electrical fire hazards and poorly performing electrical systems that give intermittent power among other electrical issues.
At Alpha Team Electric we can help you diagnose and determine the wiring system you have in your home or business. Our electrical inspection services and evaluations will help you uncover issues like these so that you can protect your home or business from damage and other hazards that can put your family or employees at risk. Call us today for a Free In-Person Consultation and Estimate and we can help you with your home electrical wiring or commercial wiring needs and services.
The Basics to Electrical Wiring
To understand the different types of electrical wiring systems found in homes and businesses here in Round Rock, it is important to first understand the basics of electrical wiring. Electrical wires found in most buildings or residential housing here in Round Rock are made up of a material that can conduct electricity, better known as a conductor. In your basic home wiring systems, a conductor is typically one thick strand of aluminum or copper. Or it can also be multiple strands of conducting material generally grouped together to form one single continuous wire.
To prevent those wires from electrocuting us, sparking, and causing fires, along with other potential hazards, they are insulated in non-conductive coatings typically made of plastic. These wires that are covered, either in black or red coatings are what to be considered “hot” wires and should never be touched. Neutral wires should always be found in white coatings and are technically safe to the touch. However, a good rule of thumb is never to touch black, red, or white wires because the installation may have not been performed to code due to negligence or inexperience. The only wires that are truly safe to the touch are known as “ground” wires. This is because they are made of a single piece of copper that either remains bare or is coated in green plastic. Ground wires are usually standalone wiring that is not connected to any of the electrical circuits so that they do not carry any electricity. They are used as a fail-safe in the event something goes wrong with a hot wire.
